The bird poop factor…

One day when I got home from work there was bird poop on my door. For the life of me I can’t figure out how the birds did it! They had to be in a serious dive pattern, involving a u-turn to land it where they did.

The following Saturday morning, I went about cleaning it. What a great task to have on the list for a beautiful spring Saturday, right?

After cleaning the spot where the bird poop was, the clean spot really made the rest of the dirt on the door stand out. Well… I would just mumble about that each time I come home.

So I cleaned some more. And I thought to myself, “This is why I don’t wash my car as often as I used to do. Once I actually wash it, I’m compelled to towel it dry to avoid streaks, then to wipe out the trim around the doors and along the floorboards. Then I need to vacuum it. Then I need to scrub the dash and cup holders. Then I need to clean the windows (inside and outside). And by clean the windows, I mean roll them part of the way down so I get the part that makes the seal at the top. Thankfully there are now tire and wheel cleaners you can spray on and just walk away. Why does wash the car always turn into detail the car?! To top it all off, you’d think I would want to drive it around town and show it off. But no I don’t… because I don’t want it to get dirty again. Why can’t I clean just the part I planned to clean, and then go work on the other things on my to do list?”

As my five minute chore turned into 15 minutes, the amateur philosophy simply continued to spew.

  • It’s better to get some of it clean, than none of it clean, isn’t it?
  • It’s easier to clean one layer of dirt at a time, than 10, right?
  • Clean the worst part first and the rest of the cleaning will be easier.
  • Take as broad swipe at it because it is better to clean all of it a little bit, than it is to clean a little bit really good.
  • The clean spot on my door represents the area of life that I’m focused on right now. When I focus on it too much, it makes the rest of life seem out of whack.

Finishing up my little chore, I was amused that a little bird poop had actually instigated personal reflection. Who knew? It also crossed my mind that I would sleep good, knowing that I had a nice clean door, top to bottom. Later that day, I bagged up the garbage and opened the back door… guess what kept me awake that night?!

Tell me about a bird poop experience in your life! I’d love to hear the stories…
